It's been a while since I blogged about yoga so I thought it would be appropriate to list and explain the benefits not of yoga in general, but of having private yoga sessions. If you have practised yoga asanas, you have probably been in a public class or have watched videos. We all started like that and there's nothing wrong with that. I feel very unmotivated if I practise yoga by myself so practising in a class gives me the sense of belonging that I need.
However, private sessions undoubtedly allow yogis to see and feel progress not only in their practice, but in their mentality and lifestyle. The best way to truly deepen your practice is to work 1:1 with a yoga teacher that inspires you and that you trust. So let's see why a private yoga lesson is so different from a group class.
1. It's individualised
I shouldn't have to explain this but I will for the purpose of the blog. The poses and modifications will cater to your body, experience and level, not to mention the teacher will design the class around your health concerns, limitations and/or injuries.
2. It's convenient
You and your teacher will arrange your class schedule on your terms so you won't have to worry about something getting in the way. This way you will have a more flexible yoga plan and you don't have to stick to the same time for the same class, not to mention your anxiety around scheduling will be reduced.
3. You can practice anywhere
Your private yoga classes don't have to take place at your home or in a studio. You can have yoga at work, online or at your instructor's space. If the weather permits, you can even practice yoga outdoors, at the beach, in the park or wherever you prefer that is peaceful and safe for the lesson to take place.
4. You can focus on your intention
Whether you need support towards a goal or you are looking to improve your physical and mental state, private yoga lessons are designed specifically for you. You can ask questions, you can set your pace and you can choose exactly how your yoga class works, so that it meets your individual needs.
5. Safety and self-practice
During private yoga lessons, the asanas will be tailored to your body and the teacher will ensure proper alignment so that you won't risk getting injured. You will learn how to practice safely so that you can continue doing so when you practice alone.
Don't forget that a private yoga class may take many forms, such as physical practice (asanas), meditation, philosophy, pranayama (breathing techniques). It is important to find the right balance in your practice and feel supported by a professional not only on a physical but also on an emotional level.
