Comfortable in the uncomfortable

We all encounter different degrees of challenges throughout our life. This is an integral part of being human and of going through the process of living and being. Some difficulties may arise unexpectedly, while others are expected and inevitable obstacles on the journey towards growing.

Of course, our comfort zones are cosy and familiar, but nothing really grows there as you may already know – but may not want to admit. The magic of life happens in the growth zone, when you’re stretched, challenged and overwhelmed. This is also where you learn, adapt, and eventually thrive.

If you’re struggling to be convinced, you can reflect back on a major disaster in your life. Think about what that experience taught you, what you gained, which is what you later applied as you went through similar situations. This is growth and it’s where the magic happens.

Being comfortable while uncomfortable is the ability and willingness you possess to embrace the unfamiliar, the challenges or uncertain situations as opportunities to learn and grow. You can also think of it as a free personal development seminar!

Being uncomfortable is a normal and healthy part of life that cannot be avoided. You can be uncomfortable without being scared. When faced with something new or different, most people experience some degree of discomfort, anxiety or even fear at first but they usually adapt to the situation after getting used to it and they bounce back.

But how do you become comfortable in the uncomfortable? There are some skills you can develop while learning to take up change:

- Be willing to embrace difficult situations.

- Build your resilience to move through such situations.

- See the difficult situations as an opportunity to learn and grow.

So who wants to be uncomfortable? No one. We don’t want to but we need to. In order to grow emotionally, personally and professionally, we must learn to lean into discomfort, grow and develop our resilience to navigate difficult problems and situations. So what are some steps you should take?

The first step towards growth is recognising the things that make you uncomfortable and therefore understanding how they make you feel. Knowing these particular triggers that make you feel uncomfortable and facing those challenges head on instead of avoiding them is the best way to learn and grow.

Here are some ways to overcome being uncomfortable and embrace this feeling altogether:

- Get comfortable being different

- Take risks and challenge yourself by doing unfamiliar things

- Explore new experiences even if they are different to the ones what you are used to

- Try new things e.g. a new hobby or a new food

- Get comfortable challenging ideas, beliefs or opinions of yourself and others

- Get comfortable with discomfort in different social settings

We can learn so much about ourselves when we embrace discomfort and take risks. We discover our limits and how capable we truly are. Life would be so boring if we always stayed in our comfort zones. So, be brave and let go of what’s familiar, safe and predictable. Try new things, take on challenges and remember that the benefits come when you’re willing to step outside your comfy bubble. Get ready to discover the awesome person you can become and experience the adventure that is called life!
